Oil skimmers are used to remove free and floating oil from water.
Oil water separators are flow thru devices to remove oil from a moving water stream.
SkimOil, Inc. is a specialty design/builder that has all technologies available for skimming floating oils, fuels, fats and grease from the surface of water. All of SkimOil oil skimmers are well proven, state of the art and highly specialized systems used extensively in the steel, WWT, power plant, manufacturing and petroleum industries across the globe. Oil in water is a big part of the industrial processing world.
Oil skimming for industrial purposes (except the steel industry*) and inland water spill response is generally done by one of the two following methods:
1. Selective oil skimming which exposes an oil attracting plastic or metal (i.e. belt, drum, disc, tube or rope mop) to the oil on the surface of the water. Always motor driven, this media once coated with oil, is then wiped, wrung or scraped off for transfer of oil by gravity draining or by pumping to storage. This method is highly selective and delivers relatively little water with the oil. When these selective skimmers are running in wall to wall oil, they will actually pull the oil into the skimmer, much like you could pull a carpet across a room. These skimmers must be in oil to work, and are the most efficient oil skimmers known on Earth.
2. Gravity oil skimming is done by taking advantage of the difference in specific gravity between oil and water. Most oils are lighter than and float on water. Gravity oil skimming includes adjustable standpipes, fixed overflow weirs and floating weir oil skimmers. Gravity oil skimming can also remove scum, floc, vegetation like seaweed and algae, foam and some floating junk. All gravity oil skimmers are overflow weirs. Best of all, SkimOil, Inc. can also set up gravity oil skimmers to skim below the surface. Floating weir oil skimmers (FWS) can be installed almost anywhere you have the room, hook a hose to it, put it in the water and start pumping liquid from the skimmer. These are the only skimmers in the world that can collect light sheen. FWS skimmers are true surface skimmers.
These floating weir oil skimmers create a depression or low spot in the water, so whatever is on the surface will run into it. It actually allows you to drain an area from the top down, skimming whatever is on the surface. This is generally non-selective, and removes a good amount of water with the oil since the water is actually the carrier of the oil over the weir. This water can often be decanted back to source, but can cause treatment and/or storage problems if it is to be discharged. Oil Water Separators are often used. SkimOil, Inc.'s floating weir type skimmers are often used for skimming floating ash, plastic, scum, floc, duckweed, algae and water meal from water impoundments.
These FWS floating weir skimmers are great for spill response---they are lightweight, easy to deploy and use, plus they have a variable recovery rate (10-400 gpm) that makes them the true utility workhorse for surface skimming from water.
All of SkimOil, Inc.'s skimmers are quality made in the USA and are furnished to solve specific oil removal problems through the use of its specialty, unique and innovative technologies and equipment that can be used for oil removal under almost any conditions. Every industrial skimming job is different and requires a unique approach.
SkimOil does oil skimmers every day ----and has found that each successful industrial skimming job requires application specific knowledge and specialized equipment options.
SkimOil, Inc.'s skimmers can be furnished as complete systems, complete with pumps and hoses.
